Festival Update One Week Out! Notes and FAQ

It's a week from today that we will be holding this inaugural festival. We are very excited. Here are some facts and figures and info that may be useful based on people writing and calling in.

829 tickets sold in advance so far
Limited lot parking is available in Byron Lot #1 behind Fifth Alarm and Leombrunis; it's free but limited to 60 spaces
Byron Lot #2 is closed as it is part of the festival area.
Street parking is plentiful and free in Byron on 2nd street east and west of the fest,and on 3rd, 4th and 5th streets and all the cross streets running north and south.
No outside food, beverages or coolers allowed in the festival area.
No pets allowed in the festival area.
Children 5 and under free.
Children under 18 should be accompanied by an adult.
21 and over must have ID checked and wear a wristband indiating such or they will not be served alcohol.
Attendees will wear a festival wristband. This will allow re-entry to the fest if you leave the area.
Tickets are available in advance for $5 and will be $10 at the gate. Buy early and save.
No chairs are in the fest area so bring your own.
Food choices: Leombruni's: Pizza, Homemade Italian Sausage Sandwiches, Brats; The Cave: Philly Cheesesteak, Sausage Sandwiches, Hamburgers; Karla's Pub: Chicago Style Hot Dogs, Polish Sausage and Sauerkraut; Tailgaters: BBQ Ribs, Pizza, Chicken George; Spanky's Walking Tacos, Corn on the Cob, Pork Chop Sandwiches; Fifth Alarm: Brisket of Beef Sandwiches, BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches; Sunsrise II: Gyros, Italian Beef Sandwiches.
$3.50 for 16 ounce plastic bottles of Miller Lite, MGD 64, Coors Lite, Mikes Hard Lemonade amnd Cranberry, Bud, Bud Lite, Bud Lite Lime, Michelob Ultra and Bacardi Lemonade.
$1 for soda pop (12 ounce cans) and water (1/2 liter bottles).

Sponsorships are available at several levels:
• Festival Sponsor: $5,000.
One sponsor. Festival name will included sponsor (e.g. “The Acme Crossroads Blues Festival.” Benefits include logo integrated into festival logo on tee shirt front and all uses, name on banner on stage, recognition in program and other advertising plus 100 free tickets
• Platinum: $1000 and up. Benefits include larger logo on tee shirt, name on banner on stage, recognition in program and other advertising plus 25 free tickets. Can have a free booth at festival (no food or beverages allowed).
• Gold: $500 to $999. Benefits include smaller logo on tee shirt, name on banner on stage, recognition in program and other advertising plus 10 free tickets. Can have a free booth at festival (no food or beverages allowed).
• Silver: $200 to $499. Benefits include name on banner on stage, larger name on tee shirt, recognition in program and other advertising plus 4 free tickets.

All sponsors were also frequently noted on stage before each act. Over 2,000 people have attended each fest and we hope to continue to grow!

Blues in the Schools Information

What is the Crossroads Blues Society?

The Crossroads Blues Society, or CBS for short, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that primarily raises funds in order to host Blues In The Schools Programs in the greater Rockford area of northern Illinois. These programs are fully funded by CBS and there is absolutely no cost to area schools for these programs.

What is the Blues in the Schools Program?

Blues In The Schools (BITS) is a nationally acclaimed cultural and musical appreciation program that helps students understand the rural and urban African-American culture. Age appropriate content is formatted to deliver high quality learning experiences that meet the goals and fulfill the mission of Blues In The Schools, Inc. Based on this premise, this program was developed to suit the needs of students in a variety of settings from organizations to schools.

Many areas of culture and art are explored in a hands on setting where students actively participate in the creation of music and composition of songs that represent them. The purpose of the program is to introduce students to the Musical Art form that originated in Africa and was brought to the new world via slavery. The music has since undergone many changes but still maintains the essence of deep expression that the tradition it is based on instills. The programs goals include providing a forum where students can identify the cultural, geographical and historical origins and evolution of Blues music and the people who composed and played it while gaining an understanding of it's significance in the world of modern music and popular culture.

What is a Typical BITS Program Comprised Of?

Programs will vary, but the following topics are typical of a BITS program:

- Origins of Blues as African Tradition

- History of Blues in the New World

- Instruments used yesterday and today

- Migration and Evolution of the Blues

- Definitions of Blues terms

- Songwriting exercise

- Interactive Music making

Since its' inception in 2001, our BITS programs have touched over 25,000 students during 86 programs in the Northern Illinois area. Programs have been held for schools in the Rockford, Winnebago, Freeport, Belvidere, Harlem, Honenegah, Meridian, Byron, Dakota, Pearl City , Eastland and Durand School Districts.
